The Breaking Dawn Experience

Last weekend, Aug 1, I was in Forks, WA for the book party launch of Stephenie Meyer's fourth and final book in a saga that began with 'Twilight.' These books are much fun, especially since they take place in my hometown. Around 11 PM on Friday night my mom and I gathered with the over-sugared teenagers and their parents at the Chinook Pharmacy in downtown Forks.

Everyone was bouncing with excitement! Many people were not from Forks - we met a mom and daughter from Phoenix ... the teen wore my favorite shirt of the night, which read, "I'm betting on Alice." Which, if you've read the books, know exactly how funny that is going into that 4th book!

The store offered free lemonade and scones and while we wandered the aisles and eavesdropped on the kids claiming loyalty to either Edward or Jacob, we waited for that midnight stroke. At 12:01 AM the first person happily ran from the bookstore, presumably out of excitement to get home to read (and not due to being bitten by something or someone... oooh, thpooky). By 12:20 AM mom and I had our copies and drove home quickly to break the binding.

We read for an hour maybe that first night, but that Saturday was completely devoted to reading. It's a good thing it was overcast because in a town like Forks it's really hard to stay indoors when the sun is shining. By Saturday night our vision was blurry, the alphabet swimming on the pages before us. I'm pretty sure we stopped to eat meals, as my mom made a yummy chicken dinner. Hmm, I *think* I put the book down for that. How rude if I didn't!

Around midday on Saturday, my sister Katie came to claim her book. My mom kindly pre-purchased 2 books, one for me and one for Katie. When Katie arrived I could see my mom torn between seeing her darling daughter and not wanting to give up the book. :) Luckily for my mom, Katie's high school reunion was that day so my mom plowed through the book just in time to hand it over to Katie Sunday morning.

So, yeah, my fast-reading mom finished Sat night. Jealous! I had to drive back to Seattle with the unfinished tome teasing me on the passenger seat. I was, for the first time maybe, thrilled to have an hour wait at the ferry.

I finished the book on Sunday at 7 PM. Katie finished a few days later. We all loved it. This book was as good as any of the Harry Potter books!

What a wonderful story of our experience last weekend. You are also a good writer, my dear! Yeah, we really didn't talk AT ALL that Saturday, did we? Worth every minute even with blurry burning eyeballs as a result!

I WANT THAT T-SHIRT! Too funny considering her role in the end : )

I named my car after Alice... it's black (like her hair) it's sassy...it's Alice!

Your post made me want to check this series out. Fortunately, the Singapore library has 75 copies of Twilight.
