Why is it so funny to shout requests for 'Freebird' during concerts? How did that all start and why do I smile each time I witness this long-standing tradition?
We went to see Nickel Creek last week at McCaw Hall in Seattle and were treated to a great show. The opening act was a guy named Jon Brion, who is one of those people who just *is* a musician. He doesn't just play an instrument or sing well, he excels at anything and probably sight-reads too. He reminded me a bit of Rufus Wainwright. Anyway, he came out on stage a little disorganized, ready for anything and played 1 song and joked, "any requests?" Someone, of course, yelled, "Freebird!" and we all laughed, and he eventually played the song. Pretty well too.
Nickel Creek was in great form, playing most of my favorites and cracking jokes and just having what seemed to be a joyful time. All around great show!

As a rock radio refugee, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard drunken idiots scream that, usually at live broadcasts or Seafair parties...But currently, maybe it's because I have kids, or maybe I'm just juevnile (nah, that can't be it) but I loved it in the movie CARS when someone yelled "...Freebird..." from a crowd scene early in the movie in a kind of far off and scratchy voice...It makes me laugh every time...and my kids look at me like I'm nuts...Which may, or may not, be true...
This was such a wonderful show. I'm glad we all went together, even if seated apart.
Freebird was, in fact, a highlight...just because it was so random and it worked so well.
Freebird!!! :)
see this here for a bit of background on this little meme. as silly as it may be, i still get a kick out of the occassional Freebird request - if the timing is right...
hope you're doing well?
cheers and hugs from Germany,
